[ Bucky scrambles after him, clawing over and through rubble in a nearly desperate rush. As he pulls at some rebar protruding from the wall, bending it to keep it from stabbing them, he feels a rumble.
Bucky stops, waiting for the building to stop shuddering and settle. ]
the shaking sends a jolt right to his very core. His eyes go towards the ceiling as if he's expecting it all to come falling on them, buried alive.
He is not an easy man to scare, but for a moment, all he can think about is his family encased in rubble, how it felt to dig them out, how it felt to see--]
James, stop. Just-- stop for a moment.
[He needs to think at least, consider this-- predicament.
[ Bucky pants, nearly frantic with the wild instinct to run and get free. His body is starting to vibrate with the adrenaline, they don't have time for this- ]
It's not stable. What if it collapses? Have you seen bodies crushed beneath rubble, James? Dug them out with your own hands? When I die-- this is not how I want it to be... so I am asking you to think, James!
[Honestly, someone should be watching them at the moment. They're yelling and frantic and the opposite of what they usually are -- which seems to be a rather complimentary team.
Then again, they're both wrapped up in their own traumas. It's hard to look past it at the moment, to not want to scream and take things out unfairly on the other. Zemo takes a step back, his gaze hard as he swallows.]
Fine, then. Just remember that I am not so resilient as you.
[If things fall on him, he can't quite promise he will be crawling from the rubble the same way that Bucky may.]
[ Bucky is about to start clawing his way through the tunnel again, but Zemo's words give him pause. He puts a hand to the other man's shoulder, meeting his steely gaze. ]
I know. I won't let anything happen to you.
[ sentiment that might get one or both of them killed, but at least Bucky means it. And he's not like the others—the other super soldiers—he won't just abandon Zemo if the building falls in or if Zemo is pinned down. ]
[For some reason, he does believe Bucky when he says that. But he made much the same promises once upon a time, to his wife and child, and that certainly hadn't ended well at all, had it?
Still, he lets out a sigh, nodding.]
Fine, then. We will dig.
[Or more precisely, James will likely do most of the heavier lifting. He is rather equipped for it.]
